#MyPoloStyle
I am so excited because Chestertons Polo in the Park is right around the corner, happening on 5th, 6th and 7th of June in Central London at the Hurligham Park in Fulham. This is really one of my favorite social polo events of the year, as I also mentioned in my post Polo for the People. My best friends and I have been there the past two years and we will be there this year again, which is so special, because the three of us have been living in three different countries for the past few years, so it’s a lovely reunion for us and at a fabulous event like Chestertons Polo in the Park.
It is a 3-day event and there are a few parties in the evenings as well, so that’s several outfits to plan out. Last year my suitcase weighed 32 kg and I was in London for 5 days. Truth is I didn’t plan my outfits I just threw everything I liked in to my suitcase and got on with it. This is a totally typical crew thing to do, as we always have to carry our big suitcases, even on a short 24-hour layover, so limiting my packing is really not a strong side of mine. But I have decided to try to do so this year, cause I will be staying in London for 10-14 days and can’t bring along 100 kg, although I would like to. So it is time to get organized and start planning my outfits and I figured why not share my expertise with you guys?
I decided to look back through all of my polo pictures to see what I usually wear to polo events figuring out what #MyPoloStyle is. By the way Chestertons Polo in the Park is doing a little contest using this hashtag and rewarding 4 tickets and a magnum bottle of Lanson Champagne to the winner each Friday, so go find your polo outfits and use the hashtag for a chance to win! I already have my tickets, but I can always invite more people and who says no to some bubbly Rosé?
So back to #MyPoloStyle, those who know me personally know that I have two styles: classic/preppy and what literally looks like I am homeless. So basically I am totally color coordinated and my outfit has been strategically chosen, or I am just in gym clothes and don’t really care. But for polo I would always “dress up”, for normal chukkers through the season at the Dubai Polo and Equestrian Club I usually wear something casual and comfortable like jeans and a shirt or a summer dress on hot days and ballerinas or flat sandals, but sometimes a bit nicer as we would often go out for dinner and a little party after, but for polo events I will always wear a dress or set and heels, wedges of course!
See having the perfect polo style is not about being dressed in La Martina top to toe, although that is a safe bet and you can’t go wrong with La Martina. Perfect polo style is about being comfortable and looking good but in accordance to the surroundings. At an event like the Cartier Polo Challenge I would wear something crisp and classy and definitely heels and accessories to match, like a small handbag, but at a more casual polo day shorts, flat sandals and a big tote are totally acceptable and convenient as sitting on the ground on blankets is part of the charm. But make sure to research beforehand as for example the Guards Polo Club has an official dress code and so do most VIP or hospitality marquees.
Another thing to take in to consideration are the conditions of the event. Think about whether you will be walking a lot or standing or sitting down, even though I am basically a sidelines pro, I recently made the mistake of wearing shoes that were way too high. They were comfortable for the first few hours, but I couldn’t walk around too much as they eventually hurt. I was so upset about it as I wanted to go around exploring everything and talking to people, but I ended up just staying at our table the whole time. Another VERY important thing to think about is where you will be sitting, if you are in the grandstand or somewhere higher than others with just a gate or glass, you do NOT want to wear a short and flowy dress, same goes for windy days, just a little reminder.
Chestertons Polo in the Park is a very fashionable event, so you do want to look smart and polo perfect, but just remember a few things: most of the area is grass, so no stilettos! You will sink in to the grass, look silly or even ruin your heels, and there is quite a bit of walking around as there are different bars, food stand, shops and areas that are very fun to snoop around in, so a comfortable pair of wedges is a definite must! Are you going to be sitting at the grandstand? Make sure your dress covers what it should to avoid a peek-a-boo situation.
Check out the weather forecast before leaving home to see if you need a jacket or sunscreen, both are equally important! Although Chestertons Polo in the Park is in London, where the weather is very unpredictable, can be a perfect summer day one minute and stormy the next, so a little jacket or pashmina is always a good thing to have in your bag. Although you also want to minimize the amount of stuff you bring along, as mentioned before, there are many places and fun things to enjoy at Polo in the Park, so you will probably not stay in one spot and won’t want to carry around a great big bag. A lot of people come for the social part of the vent, but if you are interested in watching the actual polo matches and want to know a little about what is going on check out my blogpost What is polo? beforehand.
Those are my pointers of what to consider when choosing outfits to make sure you are comfortable and appropriately dressed. Now for the stylish part as you might have noticed I am a total fan of white, somehow white dresses or sets are just classy, elegant and very polo, so it is my preferred color to wear. Florals are definitely also a big hit, especially as Chestertons Polo in the Park is officially in the first weekend of summer. Blue and green are definitely also very prominent in my wardrobe. I haven’t set my mind completely on my outfits, but i am thinking crisp white for the Friday to kick-start the event clear-minded, a pretty-in-pink-florals dress for Saturday which is ladies’ day and possibly a blue or green jumpsuit or trousers and top set for the Sunday family day, so I can run around with my friends’ kids.
I hope my recommendations are of some help and that you liked my post, please leave a comment below as I love to hear your opinion! And make sure to subscribe to receive news about future posts. I will definitely be writing about the whole experience of this year’s chestertons Polo in the Park, #MyPoloStyle, tropical drinks in mallet-head-cups and polo players, it will be great, so stay tuned!
