Answer: at the high level that is the US Open Polo Championship the players will bring around 12 horses each, or sometimes more, that’s 48 horses per team. Why? Keep reading.

The polo players have a starting horse and spares for each chukker. You will see horses standing and walking around at each end of the field. One player has two horses ready to go at any given time. They do this because the field is 300 yards long and even though it may only take seconds for these powerful horses to cross it, those are valuable seconds.

And once a horse has already crossed that field a few times at full speed, they are tired and need to rest.

This is actually a rule in polo. A player must change horse between chukkers.

If they didn’t work a lot in one chukker they may come back for another one after at least one chukker of rest. But at this level we usually see them go straight for the shower.

The horse’s welfare is of highest priority in polo. The rules of polo are set to keep players and ponies safe.

Oh, casually everyone calls them polo ponies, but they are actually horses as most are around 15 hands.

And with a minute left of play we knew that the two goal difference gave them enough advantage to take the trophy home (even though wilder things have happened in polo before). The boys in blue scored once more to really seal the deal and be able to call themselves winner of the 2024 U.S. Open Polo Championship Final. Congratulations👏🏼🏆

First time going to a polo match? The most prestigious final of the season is this Sunday, the U.S. Open Polo Championship® Final! A few things to know beforehand:

1: The match consists of 6 chukkers, each chukker is 7 minutes & 30 seconds of actual play. The clock stops for every foul.

2: Players change ponies every chukker and sometime in the middle of a chukker, meaning each player will ride about 8-12 different ponies in one game (the same pony can come back into play again at a later chukker after some rest). These changes are very quick, you might not even notice!

3: Each team consists of 4 players, each with a designated role.

4: After a team scores, the direction of play changes. They now must score at the opposite goal.

5: The two finalists fighting for the title are @valientepoloteam and @ladolfinapoloteam .

6: If the score is tied at the end of the 6th chukker, they will play an overtime OT chukker. The first team to score wins it all, called the “Golden Goal”.

7: At half time following chukker 3, the spectators are invited out on the field to stomp divots, enjoy free champagne courtesy of @nationalpolocenter, and take pictures (share your content with the hashtag #NationalPoloCenter )

8: Fascinators and big hats typically worn at horse races are not fashionable for a polo match. Polo spectator attire is elegant but casual. Wedges or wide heels are essential to not sink in the grass as you stomp divots.

9: Always keep an eye on the ball, it can come out of the field and safety is a priority.

10: Enjoy the game and after party in the Mallet Grill clubhouse immediately following the trophy ceremony! 🎉

Doing the pyramids ride in style with my trusty @fairfaxandfavor Explorers. While these aren’t technically riding boots I can confidently say they are good to ride in.

These boots are good for everything, I’ve definitely put them through everything; desert rides, stick and ball practices, muddy walks in the woods, snow, sand, water, they keep my feet dry and cozy. And I’ve had them for 7 years I think. They still look great. Just a little PSA on the best boots I own.
