Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic LA
A few weeks ago I had a magical experience in the City of Angels. I was invited to the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, a very popular polo event held only twice a year, in New York at the beginning of Summer and in LA marking the beginning of Fall. In May I tried to get a ticket to the event in New York, but to my disappointment they were sold out in less than 5 minutes!! So you can imagine the joy and excitement I felt about being able to attend the event in LA, with 5,000 other people!!
The Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic was founded in NYC in 2008 to attract attention to the sport of kings, which was once an olympic sport and enjoyed by enormous crowds in the United States and worldwide, but unfortunately now has become a minority sport enjoyed only by a select few. Veuve Cliquot in collaboration with polo star Nacho Figueras aim to turn this around and bring polo back to its glory.
The LA edition of this glamorous event was founded in 2009 to further the interest and keep the tradition of polo alive in Los Angeles whilst supporting the last grass polo field in the area. The Will Rogers Polo Club once served as the home to polo matches amongst the stars, including Will Rogers himself as well as Walt Disney, Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable, and Douglas Fairbanks.
Arriving at the Will Rogers Club it was evident that something fabulous was taking form, a bubbly energy was in the air, of course aided by the lovely Veuve Clicquot Champagne we were all about to enjoy. The Rosé garden was elegantly decorated in a romantic style with touches of pink and the iconic yellow color of the classic Veuve Clicquot champagne bottles.
In true #ClicquotStyle I had been planning my outfit for quite a while. As I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted, I brought out the old sewing machine and created it myself. Attending the Rosé garden it was only fitting to wear something feminine and pink (and with hidden pockets I am pretty sure this is my favorite skirt ever!).
On the opposite side of the pitch was the general admissions area, where spectators had found their spot on the grass with picnic blankets and baskets in true polo tailgating fashion. Several game stations and props for photo opportunities created entertainment for all until the true entertainment of the polo match was to begin.
The teams were lined up and ready for battle. Team Black Watch starred world famous polo player Nacho Figueras as the captain, joined by his lovely wife Delfina Blaquier alongside Javier Tanoira and Tom Barrack. The opposing team, Veuve Clicquot, boasted the talents of Athena Malin, Marcos Llambias (team captain) and the father-son duo Alfonso Giannico and Sterling Giannico, making this match a true family affair.
A tough first few chukkers were played, with a close lead and Nacho showed his flare and made the crowd go wild. I personally enjoyed explaining the rules to anyone who stood around the white picket fence looking a little puzzled.
Then it was time for the quintessential divot-stomp and naturally some #MyPoloStyle spotting.
Especially this feminine and very #ClicquotStyle pink and yellow dress made it on my top favorite list.
A similar style in blue and white with the perfect cut and fit for a day out at polo was Aliana’s dress. I adore feminine outfits and a full puffy skirt is always a good idea in my opinion.
The match ended with a 9-5 victory to team Black Watch and Delfina Blaquier was awarded MVP.
As the match had ended and the sun was setting it was time to sit back and enjoy some scrumptious macaroons and bubbly Rosé Veuve.
It is safe to say that this is one of the best social polo events of the year and I can’t wait till next time!!
